Invasive Species of Oregon series

It has to be everybody aware of this issue if we are going to be able to maintain the environment we know and love here in Oregon.

Q: Why is the issue of invasive species so important in Oregon?

A: What's happened in the past couple of decades is that the rate of introduction of new species has skyrocketed. It's an exponential curve, and it mirrors the rate of change in trade and travel. It is a by-product of trade and travel. In the past couple of decades, our programs have been racing to keep up with all of these new introductions.

And it's not just Oregon; it's national, and it's actually worldwide. Things that we consider native here are a problem in other parts of the world. There is just a worldwide recognition that invasive species are important.

They are especially important in this state because our environment is actually in fairly good shape.

Questions Regarding Democratic Candidate

On my way home from work last night, there were several items of interest about Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton. I sensed a spirit of desperation in Clinton.

Neither would be my choice for the office of President of the United States, but each is better than the Repuboican choice we seem to be developing as the prime candidate.

My question to you is two-fold:

Is Hillary Clinton getting to a point of desperation? Will her desperation to win cause her to fall into a major blunder?

I ask you, the readers, to answer the questions, and to offer a solution.

Fast rail offering hip personalised travel

E-TICKETS, on-board DVD rentals, events, and even new encounters – French rail's new iDTGV trains are testing a new way of travel.

Music blares from a speaker in a bustling bar and conversations get louder as customers just out of Paris meetings trickle in, settle down and order drinks.

The barman hands over a beer, spilling a little as the brightly-coloured buffet car on the top deck of a customised high-speed TGV train rolls into its three-hour journey to the Mediterranean port city of Marseille.

Joined to a regular TGV train, this iDTGV, playing on the French word "idee" or "idea", is operated privately, but owned by the national SNCF rail company and designed as a laboratory for future rail travel.

Planned party train on the way

The iDTGV was launched in December 2004 and offers cheaper tickets, internet reservations, and services aimed at pleasing passengers, including a soon-to-be launched party train, to help the SNCF better compete with low cost airlines.

Every School Every Thursday -- Des Moines West

Presentations can include PowerPoint presentations, movies, demonstrations, Web quests, or re-enactments. Students also become aware of how to organize information and develop skills valuable in making presentations. Project-based learning has proven very successful in Shonts' English classes at Scavo.

For a project in Eve Shonts' English class, Breann Schaffer planned a mini-unit on the Holocaust for Jewish Awareness Month. It has been an intense week of learning about the Holocaust and the many perspectives and stories regarding this horrendous atrocity. The culminating activity is a speaker coming in to talk to students and show video clips of several survivor stories. In addition to the Holocaust, students related this event to similar incidents throughout history. Many students were shocked to find out that we didn't learn our lesson and that genocide continues to this day.

A Clean, Well-Lighted Space

These teams must consider both long term and short term benefits of any deal made. For these teams, any move will be scrutinized and any misstep will result in public ridicule. These fans will be unforgiving. For example, consider the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have missed the playoffs the past two seasons. It is not entirely out of the realm of possibility that the Leafs make the playoffs this year but, as only two teams in the league have worse records, the Leafs prospects are less than golden. Torontos first order of business should be to make themselves competitive in their own division, where they are the only team with a losing record. They can do that one of two ways: they can plan for the short term and buy a free agent (the band aid approach to franchise maintenance), or they can blow this team up and start over.

Firm to transform Glendale Airport into employment hub

The developers who brought Glendale Cabela's and the larger Zanjero project near University of Phoenix Stadium are now tackling improvements to Glendale Municipal Airport. The facility, about a 5-minute drive west of the stadium off Glendale Avenue, has largely been a private pilots' airport with numerous single-engine aircraft. Phoenix-based Rightpath Limited Development Group is upgrading amenities to cater to corporate jet traffic. Many of the changes should be ready to go by Super Bowl XLII in February. .

PATHWAYS KEEPS FAMILIES ON TRACK

It didn't seem likely that Christmas would find the Garcia family of Castroville together this year.

In January, Garcia said, she had to move her 12-member family into a motel room after her former landlord evicted her for having too many children in the apartment.

Born of GOP’s ‘Southern Strategy’

For most of the past four decades, however, national Republicans enjoyed the electoral benefits of their Southern, evangelized base without paying much of a political price. Notice, for example, how well the "Southern strategy" - innovated by Barry Goldwater, adopted by Richard Nixon, perfected by Ronald Reagan and inherited by George W. Bush - worked despite the fact that Republicans didn't nominate a Southern presidential or vice presidential candidate until 2000. (The president's father was a transplanted Yankee.)

A party can take its base voters for granted only for so long before there must be an accounting, and that accountability moment seems to have arrived in the past month in the form of Mike Huckabee.

Mr. Huckabee is the political phenom of the 2008 cycle.
