Fast rail offering hip personalised travel

E-TICKETS, on-board DVD rentals, events, and even new encounters – French rail's new iDTGV trains are testing a new way of travel.

Music blares from a speaker in a bustling bar and conversations get louder as customers just out of Paris meetings trickle in, settle down and order drinks.

The barman hands over a beer, spilling a little as the brightly-coloured buffet car on the top deck of a customised high-speed TGV train rolls into its three-hour journey to the Mediterranean port city of Marseille.

Joined to a regular TGV train, this iDTGV, playing on the French word "idee" or "idea", is operated privately, but owned by the national SNCF rail company and designed as a laboratory for future rail travel.

Planned party train on the way

The iDTGV was launched in December 2004 and offers cheaper tickets, internet reservations, and services aimed at pleasing passengers, including a soon-to-be launched party train, to help the SNCF better compete with low cost airlines.

Tips For Redeeming And Collecting Flyer Miles

We all like to get something for free but there is an old adage that says “nothing is ever free". A free airplane ticket is the draw of frequent flyer points but since airlines are not in the business of giving away seats for free there are some things you need to be aware of. There are also some tricks to using your accumulated air miles so you can get the most benefit out of them.

First off you need to choose a frequent flyer program and stick to that one program. Research the program and choose one that you will use most often. These programs also have partners including other airlines, retail stores, dining and car rental companies. Also research how many miles you receive for your flights and how many miles it takes to redeem a free ticket. Keep in mind that some airlines only give a percentage of the actual miles on discounted tickets so if you're a bargain hunter then pick a program that gives you one hundred percent of the miles on cheap tickets.

LIVE from the CNN Rental Car Center!

I've been told that CNN has the best political team on television. (That honor used to go to the Clintons.) So tonight I'm watching CNN. Wolf Blitzer is working the big board, crunching the numbers. Anderson Cooper, meanwhile, is consulting the panel of experts (David Gergen, Jeff Toobin and Gloria Borger, among them) for analysis. The experts sit side-by-side behind laptops, along tables that look more like counters. My snarky friend Jeremy says they look like cashiers at Chipotle. That's a cheap shot. It's obvious that the arrangement is modeled after an airport rental car center. It's a clean look and it's handily hierarchical: The A-team (as in Avis team) includes Gergen, Toobin and Borger. The B-team (as in Budget) tonight includes Paul Begala, Bill Bennett and Carl Bernstein. This is a pretty strong B-team.

Hawaii's Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course: The rare airport course worth ...

Okay, The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course is an airport course. And it's not as great of a find as some of its press might indicate. But it does offer a good round of golf and some very affordable green fees.

KAHULUI, Hawaii - A golf course by the airport conjures up similar feelings to an '80s cover band performing "Man in the Mirror."

It’s official: Rockford lands Ireland flights

Twice-weekly flights between Rockford and Shannon, Ireland, will start June 26, according to Kenny Tours. The Maryland-based company signed a deal Thursday with North American Airlines to fly the route through Aug. 31, said Bob Nay, Kenny Tours' director of sales and marketing. The flights will be Thursdays and Sundays. Round-trip airfares start at $888, including taxes and airport fees. Six-night motor coach tours, including airfare and hotels, start at $1,489. Six-night bed-and-breakfast stays, including airfare and car rental, start at $1,489. The seasonal model is similar to Chicago Rockford International Airport's other international route, Apple Vacations' weekly flights to Cancun, Mexico, in the winter. But the Ireland flights will be on Boeing 757s with almost 200 seats, which would be the largest plane used on a regularly scheduled passenger route from Rockford.

McCain looks confident; Democratic race tightens

A relative new comer and novice administrator, Roh was supported mainly by enthusiastic young voters who were dying for "change" of all the old systems and old politics. Roh promised hope for change. They young supporters used all kinds of digital methods to urge each other to vote and spreading the message to all others to go out to vote. He won. The "conservatives" were shocked. He employed lots of so nicknamed "boy scouts" for his inner circle, all wide-eyed idealists who vowed to turn Korea upside down, inside out by trying to make changes. The result was miserable. Roh was even abandoned by his own ruling party which itself split into two different parties. His rating went down steadily from overwhelming support of the voting public to a miserable low of less than 20%. The media treated him like dirt.

Cougar in photos hails from West

About 160 scoutmasters within the Derby-based Housatonic Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently received e-mail copies of photos of the mountain lion, which was apparently photographed five years ago outside someone's home in Wyoming.

State Department of Environmental Protection officials and staff members of the Connecticut Audubon Society also received copies.

"I'm not sure what the distribution net was, but it's way out there," said Dale May, director of the DEP's wildlife division. "I've had people from the DEP who called me who got it at home and they wanted to know if it's true."

May said it's the third mountain-lion fraud in recent months. The last trick featured a photo of a hunter holding up a dead cougar in New York state, but it was actually snapped five years earlier in Washington state, May said.
